About Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima marks the spiritual seeker’s new year and is celebrated on the Ashadha Full Moon. It is a day to reflect on one’s progress on the spiritual path, renew one’s determination and focus on the goal, and set resolutions for the coming year.
Gratitude on this day symbolises the fullness of the disciple’s awakening, transcending duality and merging into the vastness of the self - it is a day for deep reverence, gratitude, and reflection, acknowledging those who awaken our highest potential and guide us toward truth and liberation.
Guru Purnima is more than a celebration - it’s a moment of spiritual alignment. It honours the lineage of enlightened beings who have preserved and passed on wisdom through the ages. It invites seekers to reflect on their journey, recognise inner growth, and offer heartfelt gratitude.
Among the 12 to 13 full moons in a year, the Vaishakha full moon is dedicated to Buddha (his birth and enlightenment), Jyeshtha full moon to mother earth, and the Ashadha full moon is dedicated to honoring the tradition of spiritual masters. This is Guru Purnima.
Guru Dakshina
In Vedic traditions, the Guru-disciple relationship is of immense importance. Guru Dakshina is a sacred offering made by a disciple to their Guru, as a gesture of respect and gratitude for the wisdom and guidance shared. It is not about the size or value of the offering, but about the depth of gratitude and recognition of the Guru’s transformative role in one's life and spiritual journey.
A disciple may choose to offer Guru Dakshina at any time that feels meaningful - be it on their birthday, an anniversary, the birth of a child, a personal milestone, or during special occasions like Guru Purnima, Shivaratri, or their Guru’s birthday. This offering serves as a reminder of the immense grace received and the ongoing blessings of the Guru in their life.
